Graphic Novels – (1970s–Present)

Graphic novels are long-form works of sequential art that combine illustrations and written narrative within a book format. Although illustrated storytelling has much earlier origins, the modern graphic novel developed from comic strips and comic books during the twentieth century. The term became widely recognised in the late 1970s, with Will Eisner’s 1978 A Contract with God helping establish graphic novels as a distinct form of longer, self-contained comic storytelling.
