Superfast – Matchbox (1969–Present)

Matchbox introduced Superfast in 1969 as Lesney’s response to the arrival of Mattel’s Hot Wheels and its fast-rolling wheel technology. Traditional Matchbox models used comparatively heavy wheels, while the new Superfast system adopted lightweight plastic wheels mounted on thin axles to reduce friction and increase speed. The first Superfast models appeared during 1969 before the technology spread across the established 1–75 range.
